Big UFCW Organizing Election Coming In January

http://www.laborradio.org/node/12655

By Doug Cunningham

In January the United Food and Commercial Workers union will try to win a big organizing election at National Beef Packing in Dodge City, Kansas. Twenty-five hundred workers are eligible to vote in the NLRB election. The election is being held January 21st and 22nd. For National Beef Packing workers supporting the union this election will be about many issues, including respect and dignity on the job. The UFCW says the company has used aggressive anti-union tactics to try to prevent workers standing together to raise standards and make these jobs good jobs. Among the issues are on the job safety and line speeds. Workers are struggling to organize a union for a better future for National Beef Packing workers. The union has conducted the organizing campaign in many languages – from Spanish and Vietnamese to a Guatemalan Mayan dialect - reflecting the diversity of the workforce there. Union organizers believe they do have enough votes to win this election.
