The Boston Herald is looking to outsource its printing operations. The newspaper says it is seeking alternatives to its antiquated production systems so it can produce the paper more efficiently. The company is in preliminary discussions with Dow Jones & Co. about outsourcing printing operations from Boston to a Dow Jones-owned press in Chicopee, MA, located in the western part of the state. Plans would have to be taken to the union representing Herald press workers before any outsourcing could take place.
The Bancroft family, which controls Dow Jones, is considering a $5 billion takeover bid from Rupert Murdoch and his media company, News Corp. Murdoch has talked about eliminating the printed edition of the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones' crown jewel (e-GAM 7/2/07) Murdoch is the former owner of the Herald; he sold the paper in 1994.

2. It'll be a repeat of what the Dirty Digger did to...
...the London Times, Sun and News of the World when his News International group bought them back in the 80s. Murdoch is a union-buster, pure and simple. After he destroyed the print union in his own company, he engaged in a price war (at one point selling the Times for 2 cents a copy) that forced other papers to adopt his tactics in order to compete. Within five years, all the printers on Fleet Street were gone and most papers were produced in shiny new techno-factories in Docklands. The workers in these new factories, of course, worked for far worse pay and benefits than the old printers had.
