Labor, the Left, and Progressives in the Obama Era

April 6 @ 7 p.m.
McShain Lounge in McCarthy Hall
Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

An event sponsored by Dissent, The Nation, The American Prospect, and the Kalmanovitz Initiative at Georgetown University

After the success of health care reform, what's next on labor's agenda? How can the labor movement grow and engage with a progressive movment that speaks to the Obama era? What is the role of younger workers, workers of color, and women? Is there a new "New Deal" on the horizon?

Panelists will include Michael Kazin, professor of History at Georgetown and co-editor of Dissent magazine; Barbara Ehrenreich, activist and author of many books, including Nickle and Dimed; Liz Shuler, Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO; Gerry Hudson, Executive Vice President of the Service Employees International Union; Harold Meyerson, columnist for the Washington Post, and editor-at-large for The American Prospect; and Christopher Hayes, Washington editor of The Nation magazine.

Directions: Walk through the university's main entrance at 37th and O Streets, NW, past the statue of John Carroll. At the end of the lawn, turn left toward the library. At the library, turn right down a road heading downhill. McShain Lounge is across the street at the bottom of the hill, slightly to the right.
