Kansas Democrats Honor AFSCME Affiliate

March 10, 2010

The Kansas Organization of State Employees (KOSE), AFT/ AFSCME Local 300 has received the Dennis M. Langley Award from the Kansas Democratic Party.

The award is given to persons or organizations “whose financial support and commitment has helped build a foundation for the operations of the party. It recognizes the generous, unselfish commitment of individuals who support Democratic causes year in and year out.”

The award is considered the party’s highest honor.

KOSE represents more than 11,000 non-supervisory, non-confidential classified employees in the executive branch of state government. Executive Director Jane Carter says the “best part of this award is that it recognizes the efforts of KOSE to bring state employees together to help elect our bosses at the state capitol.”

Created in 2007 by AFSCME and the American Federation of Teachers, KOSE is able to pursue its goals through the dedication of its member activists. When those goals coincide with those of the state Democratic Party, the combination is nearly unstoppable. Last year, in fact, KOSE won two of the three state legislative seats that the union supported – unseating two Republican incumbents last November.

KOSE was able to take eight workers from their full-time jobs to work on behalf of Democratic campaigns for nearly two months. Together with union staff, they door-knocked across the state, spent more than 600 hours working phone banks and supported Democratic candidates in other ways.

KOSE also supported candidates for state legislature and the governor’s race.
