Economic Report:

According to a new study by the Economic Policy Institute only 67 percent of the unemployed in the United States were actually collecting unemployment benefits in the fourth quarter of 2009. The organization laid out a number of factors that may prevent an unemployed working from receiving benefits. EPI writes that many state laws “make it difficult for part-time workers to collect benefits.” Additionally not qualifying are workers who were forced to leave jobs due to medical emergencies or lack of childcare. And, of course, workers who quit or were fired for misconduct don’t qualify.
