Unemployment And Economics:The Result Of 30 Years Of Bad Policy

Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO President, appeared on the CNN political moment “State of the Union” today, and rather than blaming the Bush administration, touted the accomplishments of the present administration. It was a fine follow up after the President did much the same on Saturday. Just two days ago the Labor Department announced that unemployment went up to 9.6% and that 54,000 jobs had been lost, but Mr. Trumka, along side of president of the National Small Business Association, Todd McCracken, defended the President’s policies to the end.

Didn’t Attack Bush, But

Of the President McCraken had this to say: “He’s created more jobs in this recession than George Bush did in eight years with a surplus.” He did go on to say though, that not enough jobs had been created, but placed the blame for this on Republican obstructionism. When the President’s position on business was questioned he came to Obama’s defense with “This president has done more and given more tax cuts to business than anyone before, we had no choice but to rein in Wall Street. We had no choice but to rein in health care costs.” One can’t help but notice the “We” in these statements.
Mr. McCraken’s Beef With Obama

When asked about the administrations policies Mr. McCraken had this to say: “I think it can be perceived that way because a lot of things that have come out of Washington in the past year and a half do inject uncertainty into the economy, that does hurt job growth.” When he talked about the uncertainty of restructuring the tax policies he said that it does “sort of add to that general unease.”

oth men had very little to say about this administration and their policies in a bad way, it can only be hoped that Mr. Trumka is correct in saying that the foundation had just been laid. If this is true, all we have to do from now on is build on it, but somehow, I don’t think this is very likely.
