Cowboys, Colts, Saints and Eagles vote to decertify the union

http://www.examiner.com/dallas-cowboys-in-dallas/cowboys-colts-saints-and-eagles-vote-to-decertify-the-union

The Dallas Cowboys may have lost their opening game last weekend, but the Cowboys players took a big step in the fight against the owners. The Cowboys, Colts, Saints and Eagles players all unanimously voted to decertify the player's union, a crucial step in ensuring that a lockout does not happen next year.

While the prospect of a lockout has been playing in the media for the past couple of years, the reality is that nothing is certain even if the players don't decertify the union. The existing rules with no salary cap (and, more important to some teams in smaller markets, no minimum amount to spend on player salaries) extend for several years, and some owners are quite comfortable continuing with those rules in place.

But player's step to decertify the union is an insurance policy in case the owners want to lock the players out next year by allowing them to sue the owners should it come to that. Should they wait until after the CBA expires to decertify, they would need to wait an additional six months before they could sue.

1. I'm confused.
...the Cowboys (Colts, Saints and Eagles) players took a big step in the fight against the owners....(by) unanimously (voting) to decertify the player's union...

Is this a report from the Seinfeld Bizzarro World episode or am I missing something here? Decertifying the Union PROTECTS the players????? Someone please explain this to me, thanks.
