Nearly half of the more than 2.2 million unemployed workers who are 55 years of age or older have been unemployed for six months or longer. That’s according to data from the Labor Department. That is a record number and is more than double what it was at the start of the recession. Census numbers released last week show that the poverty rate in that age group is growing. 9.4 percent of those between 55 and 64 are living in poverty.
