The International Association of Machinists is looking at October 14 as the start date for a vote at Delta that could see 14,000 baggage handlers unionized. Jesse Russell reports.

The National Mediation Board announced the election date on Tuesday and said it will run until November 18. The vote will include workers who are already unionized, but came on board when Delta and Northwest merged in 2008. An additional date is expected to be announced for gate workers at Delta. They would also be represented by the IAM if the vote results in the affirmative. Flight attendants will start voting for or against union representation on September 29 with the results expected on November 3. According to numbers released by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics on Tuesday Delta now has the most full time employees of any airline increasing its staff in July by 5.7 percent. That increase is mostly due to the merger with Northwest.
