ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY
COMMUNICATIONS ADMINISTRATOR
The Professional Staff Congress, AFT Local 2334, is a progressive, activist union representing 20,000 faculty and staff at the City University of New York. The PSC is seeking to hire an experienced individual who will work closely with the leadership of the union to increase the union’s effectiveness in communicating with union members, students, community and labor leaders, elected officials and the media about the union’s collective bargaining goals and policy and legislative initiatives. This is a professional, unionized position.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Executive Director, with latitude for independent decision-making:
* Coordinates internal electronic communication to members concerning the work of the union, including issuing weekly union email bulletin;
* Works with union leadership to develop communications strategies;
* Works with staff in implementing communications plans;
* Works with staff and leadership to coordinate information on PSC website;
* Drafts and produces materials for internal and external communication, including brochures, flyers and emails, about union policy positions and contract campaign;
* Works with union leadership and PSC Legislative Representative to develop lobbying materials on PSC legislative and policy initiatives concerning CUNY’s budget and other issues;
* Works with membership on media training;
* Serves as liaison with outside media; drafts press communications; may work in coordination with outside consultants;
* Maintains media contact list; develops media relationships; receives and directs calls from media;
* Assists in logistical planning for special events, such as mass meetings.
Qualifications:
* Demonstrated commitment to progressive trade unionism;
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
* Demonstrated ability to think strategically about communication of union issues to build political power;
* Extensive experience preparing communications materials—brochures, press releases, newsletters, and flyers for a labor union or nonprofit;
* Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, ability to coordinate input from a variety of sources
* Experience developing press contacts and communicating with the press;
* Demonstrated editorial and layout skills
* Experience using electronic communication tools, including web content management experience;
* Experience working with public sector policy issues, budgets and higher education policy a plus;
* Excellent organizational skills and ability to pay attention to details;

Education & Experience Requirements:
* Baccalaureate or more advanced degree required in an appropriate field;
* At least 6 years experience working for a labor union or non-profit organization, performing work related to responsibilities above;
* Experience maintaining and updating organizational website;
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office and software related to responsibilities;
* 3 employment references.

Compensation: Salary Range: $74,000 – 105,000, depending on experience
