Blue-collar workers needed to meet demand for energy products

SCHENECTADY -- GE Energy plans to hire as many as 100 blue-collar machinists and other workers as it faces growing demand for generators and related products made at its Schenectady plant.
Some of the newly hired workers will fill vacancies created by retirements at the plant. But GE spokeswoman Jan Smith said the hiring also includes new positions as the company lands new orders.
The blue-collar positions will pay $28 an hour. While GE is seeking experienced workers, it also is launching a training program with Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. Smith said that initially, "nine or 10" new employees would undergo the two-year course of study.
The 100 jobs are separate from an announcement last month that GE Wind Energy would create 150 jobs as it opens a new service center in Schenectady.
Advertisements for the blue-collar positions will appear in local newspapers this weekend, Smith said. The company exhausted its recall list of furloughed workers last year.
