LABOR'S HIGHEST-RANKING WOMAN

By MARK REITER
BLADE BUSINESS WRITER

The fact that affordable health care is an obstacle to millions of working men and women and their families in this country is troubling to Linda Chavez-Thompson, who is the labor movement’s highest-ranking woman.

“It is just beyond imagination that Americans are faced with choosing to buy food or medicine and paying rent or a visit to the doctor,” Ms. Chavez-Thompson said.

She will be in Toledo today for the downtown Labor Day parade and other festivities.

The daughter of Mexican- American sharecroppers, she rose through the union ranks to become executive vice president of the AFL-CIO.

She is the first Hispanic to hold the office.

A recent U.S. Census Bureau report showed that the number of Americans without health insurance jumped 5 percent last year to 47 million people.
