But some of us work for competitors. Let me give you background on myself. When I was in my 20's I worked for a little company called Frontier Communications. Which was purchased by Global Double Crossing. I worked my 80 hour weeks, and I still got laid off. I was NOT management. I was a young, up and coming, multi-racial (black/white/indian-Cherokee), college educated woman. After the the mass layoffs, losing 80k in my 401K, and getting black balled for being a whistle-blower . . . I couldn't get a $9.35 an hour union job doing customer service at Frontier(Citizens). Why? The old union folks simply despised people like me - and oh - btw . . . in Rochester NY - -both Communications Unions were known to be unfriendly towards minorities. They threw Darlene Gadsen under the bus - Remember her? She was the black woman educated at University of Rochester who had worked her way up through the ranks at Rochester Tel/Frontier and when she tried to jump to the Carrier Organization - was blocked time and again. Not only did the 'Professional Carrier Organization' not want her - neither did the Union. I guess me - the 'token' in the organization was all they could take. You know what? She sued - and she won. The case had merit.
So if you are in any of the following groups (Female, Black, Latina/Hispanic, Native American, Asian, Working Mother, wish to adopt get fertility treatments, want a flexible work schedule, are part of the crunch generation - taking care of elderly parents and children at the same time, would like to job share, will be valued and treated as an equal) and you are reading this - give Verizon Wireless a try. I said I would never work for a large coporation again - but I found one that treats me well, gives me a chance, compensates me well, provides stellar health benefits, stellar benefits in general . . . So don't forget - I'm single woman and I have to keep a roof over my head. If you consider VZW - you consider a lot of people that were rank and file worker bees at Global Double Crossing, MCI, etc. etc. that lost everything - that found a job that pays us a salary that allows us to live/save/enjoy, as well as being treated with dignity and respect at . . . at a little company called Verizon Wirless.
