AT&T is the only union wireless company in America.

AT&T (formerly Cingular Wireless) is the only union wireless company, with almost 40,000 employees represented by the Communications Workers of America.
Discount for union members raised to 10%!

What's the Deal?

Union members receive a 10% discount on all available plans at AT&T (formerly Cingular Wireless) -- including family plans! Plus you are supporting CWA members at AT&T, the only union wireless company in the U.S.
What Do I Need to Do?
Go to an AT&T-owned retail store. You must go to a store to receive this discount. It cannot be ordered over the phone or on AT&T's website.

Tell the sales representative that you are eligible for the union discount and that the "FAN Number" for the discount is 00113662. Be prepared to show one of these forms of union membership.

CWA Members: Click Here to find out how to replace a lost membership card.
CWA Retirees: You are eligible for the discount if you can show membership in a CWA Retired Members Chapter.

You can even print a handy coupon that has the FAN number on it to take to the store with you!

Celebrate your savings by calling your friends and family members to encourage them to make the switch to AT&T Wireless!
What If I Am Already a AT&T Customer?

Follow the same procedure. You will need to sign up for a new two-year service agreement.
What Else Do I Need to Know?

This offer cannot be combined with any other offers or discounted rate plans. The Union Member discount is off standard published monthly access charges. This offer can only be accessed at an AT&T-owned store, not via phone or web.

7. Most teenagers know how to tap a phone land line in most neighborhoods

It only takes two little wires. With a little research you can listen in on any cell phone in your tower coverage area. Those that are paranoid can get a scrambler to keep the hobby crowd from listening in.

5. Yes it is a bit misleading on the CWA's part

But AT&T has allowed it's employees to organize without any interference. Verizon is using some nasty anti union tactic's. Here is a great video on another post to show the difference.

I'll stay AT&T. Does anyone know if there a union discount at Verizon?

8. if you knew it was misleading, why'd you post it?
I think you're right that AT&T treats its employees better, but that doesn't make your post anymore accurate.

If you want to support the concept of union labor you should get behind supporting the places that need the help the most.
;)

As for Verizon... I personally hate them nearly as much as AT&T. :D

6. And AT&T is the worst wireless company in America!
This is what I've heard from former AT&T subscribers.

I don't care myself. I use Tracfone. I don't need a permanent electronic leash, and only keep a cell phone for emergencies. But there are a lot of you poor slobs who need one, and take your phones to bed and everything. This is a concern. And the fact that those of you rich bastards who buy iPhones can only use AT&T - service charge $600 per month, as I understand it - doesn't make things any easier.

10. Excellent!
But some of us work for competitors. Let me give you background on myself. When I was in my 20's I worked for a little company called Frontier Communications. Which was purchased by Global Double Crossing. I worked my 80 hour weeks, and I still got laid off. I was NOT management. I was a young, up and coming, multi-racial (black/white/indian-Cherokee), college educated woman. After the the mass layoffs, losing 80k in my 401K, and getting black balled for being a whistle-blower . . . I couldn't get a $9.35 an hour union job doing customer service at Frontier(Citizens). Why? The old union folks simply despised people like me - and oh - btw . . . in Rochester NY - -both Communications Unions were known to be unfriendly towards minorities. They threw Darlene Gadsen under the bus - Remember her? She was the black woman educated at University of Rochester who had worked her way up through the ranks at Rochester Tel/Frontier and when she tried to jump to the Carrier Organization - was blocked time and again. Not only did the 'Professional Carrier Organization' not want her - neither did the Union. I guess me - the 'token' in the organization was all they could take. You know what? She sued - and she won. The case had merit.

So if you are in any of the following groups (Female, Black, Latina/Hispanic, Native American, Asian, Working Mother, wish to adopt get fertility treatments, want a flexible work schedule, are part of the crunch generation - taking care of elderly parents and children at the same time, would like to job share, will be valued and treated as an equal) and you are reading this - give Verizon Wireless a try. I said I would never work for a large coporation again - but I found one that treats me well, gives me a chance, compensates me well, provides stellar health benefits, stellar benefits in general . . . See below:

DIVERSITY AND WORKPLACE EXCELLENCE - Awards

2007

Latina Style Names Verizon One of the Top Companies for Latinas - Latina Style magazine has named Verizon Communications for the fifth consecutive year as one of the publication’s 'Top 13 Companies. The LATINA Style survey, now in its 10th year, is an annual evaluation of corporate America’s sensitivity to Latinas’ needs and goals in the workplace and identifies the corporations that are providing the best career opportunities for Latinas in the United States. Verizon was among 1,000 corporations included in the extensive research.

Verizon Named Top Supporter of Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBCUs). Verizon was recognized by the Historically Black Universities and Colleges for its long-standing and significant support of the universities' mission to educate minority students. In particular, Verizon was recognized by the Engineering Deans of the ABET-accredited HBCUs for its continued support of their programs.

Working Mother Magazine Again Names Verizon to 'Best Companies for Multicultural Women' List. Verizon Communications, for the second year in a row, has been named to Working Mother Magazine's Best Companies for Multicultural Women, a list of 20 companies with cutting-edge policies and practices that support African-American, Asian-American, Latina and Native-American Women in the workplace. This year, Working Mother gave the most weight to the representation, recruitment and retention of women of color. The magazine analyzed the workforce profiles of companies, including the number of women of color, women in top positions and top earners; programs for women of color; and work/life programs such as childcare, elder care and time off following childbirth.

Women's Business Enterprise National Council Names Verizon a Top American Corporation for Second Consecutive Year. The Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) has named Verizon one of the top American corporations for women's business enterprises. The winners were selected on the basis of their world-class supplier diversity programs, which offer equal access for women's business enterprises in competing for, and winning, corporate contracts for goods and services.(2007)

Diversity Inc rates Verizon Communications No. 6 on Top 50 Companies for Diversity. Also No. 8 for Recruitment & Retention and No. 3 for African-Americans. Now in its seventh year, The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list is the largest competition of its kind. The list is determined solely from a comprehensive survey of diversity management that measures CEO commitment, human capital, corporate communications and supplier diversity. (2007)

BusinessWeek ranks Verizon NO. 7 in the overall rankings. The only telecommunications company in the top 25. Criteria for the grading comprised a company's profitability, its sales-growth rate, its market value, its 1-year total return, its 3-year total return, its sales and its profits. According to BusinessWeek, "Companies in the BusinessWeek 50 represent our choices as the 'best in class' from each of the 10 sectors that make up the S&P 500." (2007)

Conceive's top 50 companies for fertility and adoption benefits. Conceive said: "To find the top 50 U.S.-based companies for fertility and adoption benefits, we sent out questionnaires to the top 100 of the Fortune 500 companies. Additionally, we cast our net even wider by scouring previously published lists and individuals’ Web postings, and collecting data and suggestions from industry leaders and not-for-profit organizations. We then followed up on all these suggestions, doing independent research and speaking with company representatives to confirm the benefits information. We’re confident that the companies we’ve highlighted deserve to be recognized for their generous family-building benefits."

http://newscenter.verizon.com/kit/diversity/awards.html You can also the awards received in 2006. Again, I'm not 'Management' - but I work for a company that values me, and the work I do.

So don't forget - I'm single woman and I have to keep a roof over my head. If you consider VZW - you consider a lot of people that were rank and file worker bees at Global Double Crossing, MCI, etc. etc. that lost everything - that found a job that pays us a salary that allows us to live/save/enjoy, as well as being treated with dignity and respect at . . . at a little company called Verizon Wirless.

11. meh
my own experiences with Verizon are from the perspective of a customer.

Hands down, they had the best network/coverage.
Customer Service, however, was an absolute *nightmare.

Back when "in network minutes" were only free on the primary line I had an account with 2 phones. They switched which was the "primary" line between the phones 5 times ... with NO intervention by my what so ever.

Every few months I'd end up with a huge bill because of it and I'd spend hours on the phone trying to get it straightened out.
I finally decided that the regular and expected hours of frustration I spent on the phone with them far outweighed any possible savings or benefit I could get from them.

Dumping them was one of the happiest days of my life.
... and I learned having *no cell phone was actually pretty damned nice :D

12. Welcome to the DU and the Labor Forum

I'm 1/4 Cherokee myself, but most people don't know it. Congratulations on your career move being a good one. Yours is very different than what I've heard about Verizon. See the video in my other post of two companies.

I do wish the unions you have dealt with had treated you better. There are always a few that can ruin an entire local etc...

Thank you for understanding the spirit from which that comes! Please, don't think that I don't know for one minute the VALUE - INATE VALUE - that Unions have had on this country. God bless the unions - without them - I would not have the benefits that I do have! I wish more 'white collar' workers would 'get' that.
