Volunteer surge aimed at swaying undecided voters

A sea of red jackets worn by Communications Workers of America volunteers fanned out from union headquarters in Cheektowaga on Saturday as organized labor and party stalwarts carried the message of county executive candidate James P. Keane.

Around the corner, the Cheektowaga Democratic organization and other supporters of rival Paul T. Clark planned their forays into several city neighborhoods and suburban towns to drop literature and encourage voting on Tuesday.

And in South Buffalo, former Buffalo Mayor James D. Griffin rallied much of the same machine that has supported him for the last 30 years as he launched his latest comeback attempt.

It was all part of the last weekend before Tuesday’s Democratic primary for county executive, as all three candidates mounted their most intensive effort yet to win over what most observers believe is a still-large contingent of undecided voters.

“We’ve got a massive field operation that I never expected in my wildest dreams,” said Clark as he worked the farmer’s market at Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway. “I feel very confident.”

Keane enjoyed the advantage of workers from Democratic headquarters and unions like the Civil Service Employees Association, Service Employees International Union, United Auto Workers and the Working Families Party.
