Government workers/union members, check in here
My background: I'm a "professional" state government worker and a full member in my union. We just formed a new local after most of our department moved into a new building.

We're having a general election in July, and I've been encouraged to run for office. I think I just may do it this time!

5. Indiana Teacher - NEA member
I have taught and been a member for 8 years. I have been a representative in my
building for 4 of those 8 years. For now, that's as far as I'm willing to go!

I am glad we have this group now, BTW. :hi:

6. UPTE - CWA 9119
I work at UCSD, and I'm a steward, and a "member at large", which allowed me to go to my first annual convention as a representative this past October. It was a lot of fun, since I got to play bartender in the evenings. UPTE standsd for University Professional and Technical Employees, and consists of workers at the University of California. CWA (Communication Workers of America) is our parent union. We are under attack from UC management, which has gone wholesale corporatist in the past few years. We recently ratified our next 3 year contract after negotiating it for over 16 months, and going status quo with no contract for over 12 of those months. UC management used every stall tactic and bad faith bargaining trick they could come up with. Even after all that, we still only got ourselves 3-4% raises over the next 3 years, which won't even keep up with inflation these daze.

Peace - :)

7. CWA are very good people
I'm a member of a progressive activist group that often utilizes their hall for our meetings. There's ALWAYS something going on there when we're meeting, which is very good to see.

My own union is a little on the wimpy side, but we seem to be seeing a lot of new activism lately-- especially since the Repub governor shut down the state government last year for a week because he refused to raise taxes even though our budget deficit was huge.

13. I'm a lifetime
member of the UAW though I haven't worked for an automaker in 30 years. That's what they told me when I joined. Currently am a shop steward for a local for the SEIU in Washington state.
Unions in general, and the big ones in particular, have allowed the good things they have accomplished to be overshadowed by the constant assault on working people via the media of the corporate interests in America.
Time to fight back!
