Steel Workers Campaign Against Toxic Imports

According to the United Steelworkers (USW), they have started a major public awareness and lead screening movement to fight the substantial influx of toxic imports jeopardizing North American families.

The campaign "Protect Our Kids - Stop Toxic Imports," provides free lead screening kits through www.stoptoxicimports.org or www.protect-our-kids.org. There are also other apparatus to combat the failed trade and insufficient regulatory policies that allows dangerous products to threaten children and jobs.

The U.S. campaign was declared at the Capitol one day after the effort commenced in Toronto at the union's Women of Steel Conference, where nearly 1,000 advocates received lead screening kits and prepared for international mobilization against toxic trade.

Women of Steel and the USW's Health, Safety and the Environment team will perform lead screening and offer training on how to remove lead products as part of their "Safe Home Sessions" in United States and Canada. Awareness of trade issues and instructions for political action will also be provided.

According to the USW International President Leo W. Gerard, toxic toys, bibs and contaminated pet foods reach US daily and endanger US families and workers. Political actions to rectfify the failed trade policies are needed to prevent the situation from getting worse.

Globalization has led to the loss of millions of North American jobs. One of which is Etch A Sketch factory in Ohio that moved production to China, where lack of workers rights and safety and environmental standards is evident.
