Frontier Strike Anniversary (the longest successful hotel strike in American history)

Two weeks ago, the Culinary Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165 joined to celebrate the legacy of the Frontier Hotel Strike in Las Vegas. September 21st marks the anniversary of the longest successful hotel strike in American history. Leaders from the community, business, and labor were all in attendance to honor the 550 workers who respected the picket line for 6 years, 4 months, and 10 days.

The strike at the Frontier began on September 21, 1991, and lasted until January 31, 1998, and centered on attempts to cut wages and eliminate the pension plan.

The sixteenth anniversary of the strike was a day to remember for union workers everywhere. "It showed us all what unity and perseverance are," said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, leader of the Culinary Union. "We'll honor those workers who taught us what solidarity really means."

The picket line became an inspiration to organized labor throughout the country. The Frontier Hotel & Casino closed this past July.
