Union cuts deal at Adam's Mark, ends AFL-CIO boycott!!!

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 17 and the new owners of the Adam's Mark Hotel have reached a contract agreement, ending a long-term boycott.

IBEW announced a settlement Wednesday, seven years after workers voted to unionize. While negotiations dragged on since that September 2000 vote, IBEW called for a boycott of the downtown Buffalo hotel.

The one-year deal, which includes pay raises based upon job title for 17 workers , is with Oxford Lodging Advisory & Investment Group LLC of San Francisco. Oxford is expected to take over operation of the Adam's Mark by the end of this month after buying the Buffalo hotel along with others in Dallas, Denver, Indianapolis and St. Louis from HBE Corp.

"It was our understanding Oxford Lodging, which has union agreements with other International Union of Operating Engineer locals in its other holdings, wanted the Buffalo situation rectified before it closed its deal to purchase the Adam's Mark Hotel," said a statement from Edward Hoock Jr., Local 17 business representative.

Officials of San Francisco-based Oxford Lodging have said that when they take possession of the 486-room hotel they plan to spend more than $1 million on renovations. A brand-name change is also a possibility.
