SIDON: More than 38,000 children between the ages of 10 and 19 years old are currently working in Lebanon, said Badra Allawi, national director of anti-child labor project. Allawi made her comments during a workshop held by the Hariri Foundation in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO) in the Hajj Bahaeddine Hariri complex in Sidon. During the two-day workshop, some 70 volunteers and social activists received training to fight child labor in Lebanon.

"Some 218 million children are working around the world," Allawi said.

Nabil Watfa of the ILO highlighted the dangers facing working children, stressing the importance of health advisors who, he said, "encourage employers to take the necessary measures that improve work conditions."

As part of the Hariri Foundation's project to fight child labor, private and public school students of Sidon waged a campaign to help children who were forced to leave their schools.

"By cutting their daily pocket money, students from and neighboring areas succeeded in providing 75 children with the stationery they need and five others with the stationery, books and tuition fees," said Houaida Assad, who led the campaign.
