HARTFORD, CONN.: General Electric Co. will close six lighting plants in Northeast Ohio and eliminate 425 jobs as part of a plan to restructure its consumer and industrial division.
Two of the factories are in Cleveland, and the others are in Austintown, Conneaut, Niles and Willoughby.
The closures will affect about 425 jobs, GE spokesman David Schuellerman said.
Another 80 jobs will be affected by a transfer of some operations from facilities in the United States and Mexico to other locations.
GE Consumer & Industrial, based in Louisville, Ky., said it also will close all of its lighting operations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which will affect about 900 jobs.
Some of the U.S. jobs will be transferred to other GE lighting facilities, the company said.
