YRC Worldwide Inc., the biggest U.S. trucking company by sales with Roadway operations in Akron, said Teamsters union members ratified a five-year labor contract that will boost wages and benefits for about 50,000 workers.

Teamster members in Northeast Ohio were split in their support of the contract. Members of Local 24 in Akron and Local 92 in Canton approved, while Cleveland Local 407 and Youngstown Local 377 vote to reject it.

The vote count for the Akron Local 24 was 140-68 and Canton Local 92 had 16-4 in the contract's favor. At Cleveland Local 407, it lost 330-212 and in Youngstown, the vote was 28-14 against.

The vote followed an announcement by YRC in December that the two sides had reached a tentative agreement. The current contract isn't due to expire until March 31. The Overland Park, Kan., company employs 60,000 people worldwide.

The accord increases the company's health and pension contributions by $5 an hour and wages by $2.20 an hour and 5.5 cents per mile, YRC said in a regulatory filing. The wage and benefit increase averages 3.9 percent, the Teamsters said.

1. 3.9 percent. And inflation, including food and fuel/utilities is?
It is a suck deal. Period.

The drivers get shafted once more. They should have keyed it to real inflation not to a fixed number.
