Bakers Pride workers back on the job

One hundred workers who make Bakers Pride ovens in New Rochelle returned to work this morning after a one-week strike, a union representative said.

Eric Cunningham, a union representative for Local 888 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, said the union finalized its agreement with Standex International Corp., the Salem, N.H. company that owns the Bakers Pride brand, last Friday.

The workers went on strike last Monday, setting up picket lines on Pine Street, Columbus Avenue and Webster Avenue, outside the company’s offices and plant. Union officials said wages and medical benefits were the issues that were standing in the way of an agreement.

Cunningham that while he did not have numbers available, the contract settlement was fair.

“We got a better contract,” he said. “We got our health benefits. We got the numbers we needed on the health-care.”
