Any IBEW members?
Thinking of getting into the utility industry. Would join the IBEW. Do they stand up for the members? All comments appreciated!

1. I'm an inside JW.
The IBEW is one of the best at this time. They have a lot to offer and right now are on good terms with there signatory contractors. Of course different locals have there autonomy to a degree and I'm not sure what's going on in your area. If you get in, avail yourself of any educational programs that are offered.

2. Thanks. I'm thinking of applying to SELCAT (NECA/IBEW)
Either that or going tp a private line school and then joining IBEW once I graduate with a job. Still weighing the options.

I work for State Gov. now and belong to a different union (AFSCME). IBEW line schools are the best. Some Utility companies have some pretty good schools.

Here's a link for a pretty informative website: http://powerlineman.com/

4. Cool! I'm applying for a Class A CDL and getting a physical this week.
I post over at powerlineman in the high voltage forum as "electricnutz". I'm always asking questions about the best route for getting into the industry. Shoot me a PM if you have any knowledge of apprenticeship programs taking on new grunts - I'd be most appreciative. I'm ready to locate.

5. Not aware of any openings in the SE Michigan area...
I'll check with some linemen I know. Good luck and remember "Always Wear Your Gloves".
