Western Union Financial Services Inc. said Friday that it will close two local facilities, laying off 681 employees. Layoffs likely will begin in June.

Western Union has operations in Bridgeton and St. Charles, where 501 and 180 people work, respectively.

Western Union also is shutting an office in Dallas with 117 workers.

Some employees can apply for open positions at other Western Union facilities, the company said.

Sherry Johnson, a Western Union spokeswoman, said the company decided Friday to close the facilities over several months.

Union officials said the jobs, most of which are part of call center and data operations, would be moved to other countries or to nonunion facilities.
