LOUISVILLE, Ky. --
Bruce Lunsford has plenty of rivals in the upcoming Senate Democratic primary, but the wealthy businessman is already picking a fight with Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell, who is seeking a fifth term this year.
Lunsford never mentioned his Democratic competition but offered blistering criticism of McConnell while accepting an endorsement this week from the Kentucky AFL-CIO. Lunsford broadly linked the senator with President Bush's policies, saying the country is stuck in a "poorly conceived war that needs to end," while the economy teeters on the brink of recession and health care costs continue to rise.
"The Bush administration and Republican leadership in Congress have driven our country into a ditch and Mitch McConnell continues to stand in the way, refusing to let anyone get us back on the road," Lunsford said in a statement.
Lunsford campaign manager Brad Katz said Tuesday that Lunsford is busy reaching out to Kentucky Democrats, taking nothing for granted in the May 20 primary. But Katz also took a long view of the race.
"This is a campaign against Mitch McConnell," Katz said in a phone interview. "Bruce thinks we need change in Washington, and that's who he's running against and who he's talking about."
McConnell campaign spokesman Justin Brasell declined comment on Lunsford's criticism.
