VIDEO at link.

The city inspector accused of lying about inspecting a crane that later collapsed, killing seven people, has resigned.

The Department of Buildings says 46-year-old Edward Marquette handed in his resignation last week.

Marquette was arrested last month on charges of falsifying business records and offering a false instrument for filing.

He had been scheduled to inspect the crane on March 4th, but buildings officials determined he never did the inspection.

The crane collapsed 11 days later, smashing into several buildings and killing seven people.

The building's commissioner said it's unlikely an inspection would have prevented the accident.
