'Work stoppage' enters third month (this group volunteered and helped Edwards in CB, Ia I was there)

I'm taking my 13 year old granddaughter to the picket line tomorrow with a check. It is time she learned what these things are all about. Two weeks ago we pointed at a person with the old type ads people would wear as a walking billboard front and back. (Eat at Joe's) Marta and I explained that IF McCain wins in Nov., this is the kind of job she can look ahead too. It made an impression! Remember these are good Democrats fighting 7 years of W's NLRB, Elaine Chao, etc...

The lockout at Griffin Pipe, 2601 Ninth Ave., has continued for nearly three months, and many United Steelworkers local 3141 union members are feeling the financial strain.

When the "work stoppage" began on Monday, Jan. 28, because of failed contract negotiations between the company and union, nearly 270 employees were turned away.

"We've had a lot of people find other employment," said Scott Punteney, local union president. "Some may be back, and some may not."

Staff photo/Sunshine Dalton - A fresh set of picketers strengthened the line at the front gate of Griffin Pipe, 2601 Ninth Ave., this morning at 6 a.m., and another group of United Steelworkers Local 3141 members is expected to relieve them this afternoon.

Some employees decided to retire rather than wait for a resolution.

Many in electrical and maintenance fields have taken new jobs.

More than 200 others have filed for unemployment and are receiving assistance from the union's national strike and defense fund, though the workers are ready, willing and able to return to duty.

1. Glad you put the words "work stoppage" in quotes
There is a difference between a strike and a lockout. It seems that these employees wanted to work but Griffin Pipe won't let them, at least not at that place. We desperately need a labor friendly president as well as a labor friendly congress. Elaine Chao must also be exposed. She kind of goes under the radar with all the scandals in the bush "administration". But she is certainly not a friend of Organized Labor.
