Investigation under way; town's economy takes hit

GILCHRIST - Lumber, heavy machinery, hot steam and safety placards.
Those are the sights, and normally the sounds at the Interfor Pacific sawmill in Gilchrist are loud and bustling.
But this week it's silence.
Closed down for the week because 45-year-old James French of Redmond was killed Tuesday.
A temporary worker hired just a few months before, witnesses say French was about to do some welding on a de-barking machine.
He reportedly thought everything was turned off, all while a 2,000-pound metal roller hung above him.
