Fatal crane accident in Stowe leads to federal fine

A crane rental company has been fined $11,550 for safety violations following a federal investigation of an industrial accident in which a Birdsboro man was fatally crushed when a crane toppled.

The Occupational and Safety Health Administration cited Thackray Crane Rental Inc., Philadelphia, for three violations in the Nov. 7 accident at Uni versal Concrete, Stowe, Montgomery County.

Thackray is challenging the citations.

Ronald E. Kennedy, 51, died in Pottstown Medical Center shortly after the 90-ton crane tipped over while hoisting a concrete slab from a flatbed tractor-trailer, officials said.

Kennedy, a truck driver for the concrete plant, was in the cab of the tractor-trailer and was pinned between the cab roof and steering wheel.
