AURORA — City Councilman Ryan Frazier was in China recently for a global issues conference when he took a break to call his family.

His 9-year-old son, Jalen, had seen his father's picture on a television ad. The commercial, paid for by a pro-labor- group supporter, criticized Frazier for what it said were questionable campaign contributions he received last year.

The commercial implied that Frazier was on the take.

Jalen got on the phone and asked his daddy, "Are you going to be on the dollar bill?" a reference to Frazier's mug superimposed on paper currency in the commercial.

"At first I had to laugh, but it hurt," Frazier said. "I have to explain to my children that there's negative tactics some people take. That's the part of politics that makes people not run for office."

The labor issue has been brewing for years. Last summer, Frazier and Julian Cole co-authored a right-to- work proposal that would prohibit workers from being forced to become union members or pay union dues.
