Some local union members who are supporters of Senator Barack Obama defended the Democratic presidential hopeful's comments Monday in Luzerne County.

The supporters attempted to stem the fallout from Obama's comments about small town Pennsylvanians getting bitter and clinging to guns or religion as a way to explain their frustrations.

They said the real problem here is the disappearing manufacturing job and Obama's commitment to recreating it.

The backdrop was the former Techneglas plant in Jenkins Township, Luzerne County, a place where the last 600 plus jobs left nearly four years ago. The plant used to make glass for televisions.

The people, most of them Union members, support Barack Obama because they said he can bring back jobs and change the way business is done in Washington.

They also met the criticism of Obama's recent "bitter" remarks head-on.

1. Yeah well, in my state they "purged" the union delgates for Obama.
Sort of like what the Obama Campaign did in California to anti war activists. But hey whatever.

2. Which state? hadn't heard this before
I met someone from SEIU a couple weeks ago who is an Obama delegate from DC...haven't heard anything about labor delegates being purged. And BTW, the Obama campaign reinstated all the California delegates, and the theory that the people who were purged were purged because they were progressive activists were debunked. The campaign initially purged everyone they didn't know well enough because of fears about Clinton poaching delegates.
