It starts at about the 3:30 mark. Huckabee talks about Obama, said he gave a great speech, said we should not hold him accountable for what his pastor said and then tries to explain why Wright may feel the way he does.

1. gotta give Huckabee credit where credit it due
I don't dislike Huckabee. I wouldn't have voted for him had I the chance, but I find him likable and somewhat honest which is a lot more than I can say for the other persons in this race!

:kick: & recommend!

3. Bravo Huckabee.
I may not agree with him on many things, but I always did apreciate his candor.

A preacher should know.

5. Send this puppy out to your local Republican.
I think Huckabee showed some genuine class here. More than many of the posters on DU these days.

6. Did I hear Joe right at the end? Was he really comparing what Wright said
to black kids in his school hoping raegan would die after he was shot?

Looks like I get to write another letter to MSNBC.

7. Huckabee might have made a lousy president
but I'll bet he's a very good pastor.

And he is a classy guy with whom I'd not mind spending a few minutes.

9. Huckabee puts it in the proper perspective
Don't often agree with his politics but in this case he is the voice of reason ... completely agree with his evaluation of it ... It's really refreshing to hear a Republican who's not continuing with the attack ...

10. Huckabee just let white evangelicals know it's OK to vote for Obama
Thank fucking God (pun intended) that we're not going up against Huck in the GE. In many ways, he's the Republican Bill Clinton.

15. Huckabee much more understanding of Obama and his Pastor than many DUers...
Wow, who would have thunk...

PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT --

...

Obama has handled this about as well as anybody could...He made the point, and I think it's a valid one, that you can't hold a candidate responsible for everything that people around him may say or do. You just can't, whether it's me, whether it's Obama, or anyone else. But he did distance himself from the very vitriolic statements...

It is interesting to me that there are some people on the Left who are having to be very uncomfortable with what Wright said when they were all over a Jerry Falwell or anyone on the Right who said things that they found very awkward or uncomfortable years ago. Many times, those were statements lifted out of the context of a larger sermon. Sermons, after all, are rarely written word for word by pastors like Rev. Wright, who are delivering them extemporaneously and caught up in the emotion of the moment. There are things that sometimes get said that, if you looked at them in print, you'd say, "Well, I wouldn't have put it quite that way.

...

...As easy as it is for those of us who are white to look back and say, "That's a terrible statement," I grew up in a very segregated South...We've got to cut some slack to people who grew up being called names, being told you have to sit in the balcony when you go into the movie, you have to go to the back door to go into the restaurant and you can't sit out there with everyone else, there's a separate waiting room in the doctor's office, here's where you sit on the bus. You know what? Sometimes people do have a chip on their shoulder and resenment. And you have to say, I probably would too.

16. Huckabee has a very poor understanding of our constitution
and the basic premise of "separation of church and state."

I am not sure whether I would want his endorsement or not.

17. For being a right wing wacko..
I've always thought that Huckabee could atleast see the viewpoint from the other side... plus he has quite a few bigot-skeletons in his own closet. Either way, it's nice to see someone not condemn Obama for remarks his pastor made. People clammered for Obama to completely reject Wright, and when it happened, it still wasn't enough. Well, what the fuck about Geraldine Ferraro or Rev Hagee. This complete hypocrisy is driving me insane.

20. I think that was quite honorable. He stands to gain nothing by defending
Obama; yet he chose to say the right thing. I wouldn't vote for him, because I disagree with his views, but he actually is a guy I'd like to have a beer with -- as opposed to Bush.
