Global Warming is Here folks

Indian islands disappear under rising seas
By South Asia correspondent Peter Lloyd

Two islands off the Indian subcontinent seem to have disappeared.

Scientists believe it is more evidence of the impact of rising sea levels caused by global warming.

For six years scientists based in Kolkata have been examining the impact of climate change on the islands of the Sunderbans, a vast area where the Ganges and the Brahmaputra rivers empty into the Bay of Bengal.

after doing research theres a bunch of people who live on these islands
and the scientists were surprised it hit the Sundabarens first they were expecting the Maldives or the Marshalls... Mother Earth has a few surprises for us all

14. They'd be better off in western europe anyway, better schools/hospitals, more opportunity
This country doesn't offer as much in comparison to some other industrialized countries for the average worker.

2. I recycle,
give to the World Wildlife Fund and drive a fuel efficient vehicle, but by the time a majority of people come around to doing these things it will be too late. I try to be optimistic but this just makes reality hit home. By the time people are ready to do something it will be FAR too late...

3. wait a minute....
consider me more sold on Globalwarming than most.

But how can the sea rise in one spot and not in the other. Shouldn't the sea everywhere be rising? Unless the island is just and inch above sea level then shouldn't we see higher sea levels in Florida, New York, Texas and CA? \

I believe.... But logically.... some one splain this to me.

4. from the linked ABC story (Australian Broadcasting Corporation?)
"Scientists say cyclones are now more intense, causing more severe flooding, erosion and salt water contamination in coastal areas."

I take it in this case the cyclones were the direct cause, with global warming being cited as the reason for the increase in intensity of the cyclone events.

5. this is water levels rising its hard to believe that
scientists missed an island go under the sea 6 years ago

when you look at these islands they have beautiful houses and resorts

A bad investment if somebody wanted a place on a island

there gone and many more to come

I think India is really concerned but alas corporations own it
so it will do nothing

6. Anyone who lives near the coast can see it already
I grew up in MA near the coast and the beaches there are much smaller in just 20 years. Even 10 years ago we used to be able to see the tops of two large rocks when the tide came in. This summer both were completely under water at high tide and there was no beach left at all for 3-4 hours a days at high tide. (There is a cement sea wall to protect the beach homes, so the waves were crashing against that wall at high tide). Technically this town is at sea level, yet I biked that town so I know that there are some hills. Looking at the photos of those islands, I would guess that the highest point is probably no more than 10 feet above sea level. The tide rises and falls that much every 6 hours.

It is very believable that a whole island or two has been lost already and many more will follow if this trend continues. What are we doing to stop it? With a concerted effort this government could reduce CO2 emissions by converting to solar, wind and hydro-energy for the majority of our needs.

Imagine investments in beach property resorts timeshare etc... knowing that your investment is gobbled up by the sea... talk about act of God guess Insurance will take care of it

but lots of investors are going to lose money and others with the KNOWLEDGE are going to profit

10. Until about 5 yrs. ago,I always dreamed of retiring to a place near the ocean -
An island, or along the coast. But I realized 5 yrs. ago that the icepacks were melting and ocean levels were bound to rise - the only question was how fast. Violent weather extremes/torrential downpours & hurricanes were other consideratins. Flooding (covering nearly all of Florida, for example), like Al Gore showed in his film - is increasingly inevitable - and so I unhappily decided to stick to my hilltop, inland home.

11. California
California has a very hilly coastline; very few of the beaches are actualy flat. There will not be too much flooding there. Watch out for Florida, though.

12. Shame it isn't Diego Garcia which is sinking
There are times when one tragedy, one crime tells us how a whole system works behind its democratic facade and helps us to understand how much of the world is run for the benefit of the powerful and how governments lie. To understand the catastrophe of Iraq, and all the other Iraqs along imperial history's trail of blood and tears, one need look no further than Diego Garcia.

To see why watch this when you have the time : http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/video1027.htm
