First time I hear an (intelligent) discussion about the Patriot Act and its far reaching effects. Tavis Smiley brings up the point that everything is full circle now: the Democrats didn't have enough spine so they rolled over to vote for the Patriot Act. Now that same act is used against them by Republicans to catch Democratic governors, such as Eliot Spitzer. Panel also mention Siegelman.

2. False argument; you're missing (or purposely ignoring) the underlying point.
It doesn't change the fact that the GOP misuses the Patriot Act to check into aspects of people's lives they've not business with. They sold it as a device to hunt for "terr'rists".

Bill Maher said it best when he said: "This is not a free country."

4. Why only him and not Vitter, Bush, Cheney, Gonzales,Mukasey, Rice, Runmsfeld, Pearl, Wolvowitch etc?
That wasn't justice...it was a hit job for going after WS CEOs and bankers who are making off with millions in salaries and benefits while sinking their companies waiting for the tax payers to bail them out. Spitzer should also have gotten a medal for all the good he did too. That's what he deserved

3. He is absolutely correct but it doesn't stop there average
Americans who see rough times coming have deceided to pay off large bills with their saved money are being targeted to.

Side story

I go on a weekend dog walk with several people and we have been doing these walks for several years. The breakdown of the group
2 Neocon Republicans
1 Religous but socialist
4 Liberals (1 very outspoken- that would be me, 1 mildly outspoken, 2 very quiet)

I raised the fact that Spitzer was caught because of the Patriot Act, all 3 Republicans said good because he committed a crime and he was immoral!:wtf:

I say "But don't you understand, the Patriot Act was marketed for catching terrorist not Americans committing adultry and some questionable bank practices"! They all shrugged their shoulders.....

I don't get it, they are willing to give up all of their rights for little gain. They are okay with being lied to by their own government, I guess when they fall victim they will have no one to blame but themselves.

5. Don't forget the Democrats. Two out of three candidates have voted for it.
And two out of three have not said a word about repealing it.

(I keep saying "two out of three" because I don't want to exclude Gravel --he has no chance, but he's still a candidate.)
