2. We have so far to go.

Accepting the undeniable reality of American imperialism, capitalist expansionism, and brutal hegemony is so very, very hard for all those raised in the belief of American decency and goodness. It's like learning that a parent you've loved and trusted and believed in all your life is a secret robber/serial killer.

I think that's where vehement/violent, defensive, "my country right or wrong" nationalism (aka "patriotism") comes from -- denial of something so unthinkable that you dare not believe it. I'm thinking specifically of my parents and their contemporaries (the "greatest generation"), as well as those of us indoctrinated in U.S. pride during childhood in the '50s.

Now, in the electronic age, where people cannot hide from truth so easily, I hope that younger generations will refuse denial, accept the truth, and fight the imperial ambitions of entrenched power for the sake of all humanity. Marshall McLuhan's "global village" is very close to reality now, and it's harder for denialists to find deep enough sand to bury their heads completely.
