He has always inspired me to take my music to the next level. Now he inspires me to take my support for the democratic nominee to the next level.

6. Saw him at the supermarket in Fremont area of Seattle a few years ago. |
|
I was visiting my son who has a house in Fremont. We went to the local supermarket on a Saturday afternoon to stock up for his birthday party. We were walking from the parking lot to the store entrance when my son absolutely froze and whispered, "wait" and then "see that guy there?" (A guy was talking to two people collecting signatures for something at the store entrance.) "It's Dave Matthews - he lives in this neighborhood."
I vaguely knew there was a musician named Dave Matthews, but this guy is way after MY time. However, to my son - who played bass guitar with a rock group in college - this was like sighting the Holy Grail.
Now I know good citizens should not pick political candidates based on some celebrity endorsements, but if that's what it takes to get young voters involved in the election, then so be it. Once they're involved, they'll begin paying attention and educating themselves on the issues. Maybe we will someday start effectively educating young Americans on civics, local government functions, political philosophies, balanced budgets, etc., and why we can't take any government for granted. But until then, I am grateful to all the celebrities who use their fame to get people involved in the political process. (My son has been politically aware and involved since he was in grade school and I took him to political rallies with me. He'd already decided to back Obama before Matthews went public with an endorsement.)
