The religious left hate atheists too.

This was at an Illinois State House committee hearing.

1. Disgusting
We need to vote intolerant bigots like her out of our party.

Take away their bullhorn and let them pick up a new one at the RNC

4. No, No, No! ANY Democrat is better than ANY republican!
Absolutely everyone here at DU says so!

Stop criticizing one of our own and toe the line like you're supposed to!

-------

minus the sarcasm:

Our own party needs a serious cleaning.

(Unless s/he had uttered similar bigotry, of course.)

7. Really not much different than some of the anti-religious stuff spewed on DU.
everyone needs to practice a little tolerance. there are nut cases on both sides and there shouldn't even be sides. If the Democratic party began to look anti-religious, I would leave and oppose. And I would oppose anyone trying to shove religion down my throat. There are several atheistic bigots around today that I don't even consider anymore as there are bigoted religious people of different religions.

15. Anti-religious? Bullshit...
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 08:50 PM by Lost-in-FL
This is not about atheists vs christians. This is about christians against atheists, hindus, mormons, buddhists, muslims or anyone who is not christian. Would you like your kids to be subjected to muslim morning prayers or the reading of the koran in their school, or the reading of any other non christian faith? Why should non-christian kids be forced to christian prayers in schools? I send my kids to learn not to be subject to religious indoctrination. No wonder education is down in the slumps.

This is what Sherman is talking about, he is asking for equal treatment not just for non believers but for those who don't give a flying fuck about your christian tales. So who is the intolerant here? How is shoving religion down our throats? Ironic that she defends the religious philosophy that kept her own ancestors in forced labor for hundreds of years and still promotes women inequality.

Or to put it more plainly -there is a RADICAL Christian agenda and ther is a RADICAL atheistic agenda. Both are dangerous to freedom of thought.

27. I really do love your answers and I do think that she was out of line with her comments, but
I would like to know the entire exchange before she started ranting. My feeling is that whenever an atheist is suppressed (or ridiculed or whatever word you wish to use)- they have been violated. And I feel exactly the same way for christians or hindus when they attempt to worship voluntarily or to speak. All need to be protected.

To say atheists believe in nothing is beyond stupid. We believe in lots of things not just some magical being in the sky.

28. Or the U.S. Constitution for that matter?
And she should familiarize herself with Abraham Lincoln, who was once accused of being an atheist himself. He even admitted that although he was a Christian, he was hardly a fundamentalist one.

30. I'm an atheist, but I don't think she represents the entire religious left.
PastorDan wrote about this:

"For the record, I am firm believer that any Religious Left worth its name must include a stout defense of the right of atheists not to believe. Freedom is freedom, whether or not you agree with me."

32. Dag! She is an embarassment to adults and people of reason
First off, she needs to read some history about Lincoln before trying to conjur him up to bolster her assertions. Her screed is an example of an ignorant person not knowing when to keep her mouth shut so she doesn't expose how ignorant she is.

Secondly, what do guns in school have to do with keeping state sanctioned religion out of public schools? That was a non sequitur from a person who really had no basis for her argument other than her own faith is so weak that she can't defend it on its own merits.

Third, religious ideology has done far more harm to children than guns have.

Fourth, one has a right in this country to not believe in what she believes in.

Writing to her to voice your opinion is a waste of time unless you live in Illinois. They don't read letters from people who are not of their constituency. She needs to be publicly shamed, and has been on Countdown. She will wrap her pride around herself and belive that she did battle against Satan for God's glory. There is no hope for idiots like her. The answer to her is to vote in a Democrat who understands what the constitution means.

33. I take great offense by her comments.
I'm agnostic/atheist and her comments are ignorant and troubling. The fact is, I more than likely know more about how her bible was created than she does, and I put value in ALL life, even her bigoted ass.

I'm sincerely pissed at non-thinking people who make outrageous statements like hers based on her emotions and ignorance. Christians being overly judgmental is one reason I sought something other than christianity and ultimately left the religion. I sought a real life story and education behind the bible and because of my education, will never be the same again.
