I loved this person. Very much. It is my personal belief that, if Jesus Christ ever returned, it was Abbie. Some Christians find this offensive, but really, it’s my only contact with the belief. Is that so much to ask? To me, hippie/yippie is the logical extension of philosophical Christianity, by which I mean the core belief shorn of all the frippery, homo-hating, bigoted, cruel. bloodthirsty bullshit. Abbie Hoffman was his brother’s keeper. He helped. He shone his light.
He took a lot of beatings for the cause, starting with a near-lynching while serving as a short-haired suit-and-tie voter registration activist in Alabama. Maybe he was even killed for it — his suicide was suspicious to me, especially since Bush Sr. had been in office ten days.
As Nixon’s CIA head, Bush was responsible for many COINTELPRO activities aimed at Abbie, as well as many other total wastes of taxpayer dollars, so remniscent of these days, in which we pay taxes to have our own telephone and internet traffic illegally tapped by Republicans for political purposes. (So familiar!)
