http://www.ted.com - In Al Gore's brand-new slideshow (premiering exclusively on TED.com), he presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.

4. "If you agree with the data, but don't have a sense of urgency, you're missing the point"
... to paraphrase Al Gore. Also to paraphrase: Changing your habits is necessary for yourself, but changing the laws is necessary for everyone.

Thanks for posting this, Hissyspit! I've bookmarked it for reference.

5. Al Gore go doesn't just say it, he lives it. He is above reproach.
Al Gore is right, we should all give up lots of things. I hear that he actually flies coach everywhere he goes, and avoids first class which creates more carbon emissions, and also he rides the bike everywhere, which we should all be doing, and he also owns an efficiency. I also live in an efficiency and let me tell you , my bills are very low and my carbon footprint is very low, compared to all these other rich assholes flying around in private jets which are the biggest polluter. What Gore is saying is look at me, follow my example. You have to live it, not talk about it. Way to go Gore, you are my hero!

6. Conciousness shift.
That's the key. This needs to become the number one issue in every political campaign and in everyone's mind.

That's where people like the members of DU come in... we're the activists. Spread the word and start living the lifestyle.

7. *Sigh* Damn, I hate what we've been deprived of the last eight years.
Unfortunately, I don't have much optimism left regarding climate change and what the future looks like. Every time I see videos or news articles or anything related to climate change, all I have to do is read the viewer/reader comments to know that we are totally screwed.

I can't begin to express my deep sadness that Al Gore did not become a candidate for this election.

9. It's not about who is president, it is about us
Despite the injustices Bush has created and the opportunities his leadership has stolen from our United States, the world knows that Al Gore represents what is best about American leadership.

American leadership just needs to be reinvented again from the individual to the community on up. The solution doesn't depend upon Al Gore, it depends upon us. We are capable of meeting these challenges. If we do nothing, then there is no reason to be optimistic. If we do little, then probably the same, but if we commit and work at solving this, then an even healthier and more just world may be waiting.

Anyway, I just don't see that all hope is lost. I don't agree with all of Obama's energy policies but his Yes, WE can message is what is needed to fix our ailing democracy. It's about us and we haven't given in or surrendered.

12. If Al Gore had rightfully taken his place in the White House back in 2001 do you
honestly believe we wouldn't be a WHOLE lot further along in addressing this crisis?? Gore says himself in this video that it's more than just individuals making changes - we need the LAWS to change. Leaders, governments, policymakers, lawmakers must be made to make changes at the top levels as well.

We may be CAPABLE of addressing these challenges, but moving at a snail's pace isn't going to accomplish anything. We are already YEARS and YEARS behind where we should be at this point. We are out of time.

And from what I've seen, both Obama's and Clinton's energy/climate policies are rather tepid.

I'm not saying all hope is lost, but it certainly is dying fast.

15. The message is bigger than one person, rightful or future President
Al Gore identifies the root problem as democracy in crisis which really pins the tail on the donkey for me. We are responsible, we have the technology, we will fix this by retaking our democracy.

CFLs, responsible living, reduced Carbon footprint, etc. are just not enough to solve the problem, they are just applications of science to reduce our individual impact on the planet. Of course, legislation is what is needed, and I would say radical changes to the way we think about energy and taxes is required, but it cannot be done by one person or President.

I don't know that we would be significantly farther along in solving the mess if Gore had been President. It is possible that BushMcCain's Oil Wars, preemptive war, openly imperial America, record high global temperatures, loss of high elevation and polar ice were all necessary to create the circumstances where the climate scientists' message could receive a fair hearing. Any President who cared about the environment and respected science would have done more to alleviate the damage, but we didn't have one of those.

The circumstances of today are painful and devastating to many millions but there is reason to hope, but my hopes are not placed upon one man, rightful President or the next President. I have hope that we can fix our democracy and planet. I think we agree, I just hate placing so much of the burden of fixing our mess on anyone we would call President.

We have to get active.

11. Thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen it yet.
I opened up the youtube window to veiw it full screen and checked some of the comments. Jeeeeeeesus, it looks like the doubtful "it's all a conspiracy" 32% that don't believe are more vocal than the rest of us. I spent some time giving some thumbs down to a few idiots.

What could have been...
