Obama in 2004
04.12.08 -- 11:45PM By Josh Marshall

TPM Reader GB sent me in the video of a 2004 appearance by Barack Obama on the Charlie Rose show in which he talks about the same issue of rural and working class Americans and the Democratic party. It's from November 23rd, 2004, so just after Obama was first elected to the senate but a couple months before he was sworn in.

It's interesting to watch since it's in a very non-campaign setting and almost four years ago. He makes exactly the same point, but explains it differently. Some of it is likely equally demagoguable, but shows up some of the tendentious misconstruals of what he said.

2. Obama hit the nail on the head in regards to Galesburg.
I know some of those people and the situation was (and, is) dire. I recently bought a car from one of the displaced people. He was glad to have the job, but felt out of place after working 25 years in manufacturing and losing his job. Great people, but just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Unfortunately, they are not alone.

4. He said it much better with Charlie Rose - traditions are important
and they become even more important when everything around you is falling apart.

7. I wish he had worded it that way before.
I've been reluctant to comment on the whole "bitter" comment so far.

I honestly have been incredibly bitter. For me, it's healthcare. I slipped through the cracks, and my condition progressed greatly because of it. Though, I know enough to be bitter about plenty else. In fact, I know too much and have been beyond pissed about a myriad of topics for, oh, 7 years or so.

My issue was that he simplified it down to "clinging" to one issue. That's where he got it wrong.

He has one hell of a good point, though. I know people that have voted for R's just because of gun rights or abortion.

He seems to be pretty smart. Maybe he's trying to pull off another one of those "make-us-all-look-inside-ourselves-for-the-truth" campaign trickery tactics.
