I'll give her a 2 on the professionalism scale.

The Clinton camp/Carville try to say that jobs went up in Penn during the Clinton years. That was true only for the Phillie area. Pittsburgh has had a constant slow hemorrhage of population and jobs, and many small towns in the state have been semi-ghost towns for decades. They did NOT improve during the Clinton years.

That old guy served his country, first in the Navy, then as a teacher. He's a Republican but he's honest enough to say he found Obama's comments accurate and Obama an "intelligent young man".

Would it really be so wrong if that reporter gave that hero a well deserved lap dance from a grateful nation?

and he burned her:rofl:

It's amazing how this older generation gets it--especially the very conservative ones, like my 88 year-old mother. She's been a Democrat all her life and one of the reasons I'm such a staunch one, but being from the south, she's got that old mentality of the "black" man--but not lately. She adores Obama--and she was a Hillary supporter--and even plans to vote for him. I was stunned.

Notice she said, I just met so-and-so (past tense; already done). When reporters do man on the street interviews they almost always pre-interview to make sure that at least the person doesn't go off on a rant about government radio waves being broadcast into his dental filings.

She knew that he would concur with Obama's bitterness comment even though he would probably vote for McCain.

Transcript of Obama’s Remarks at San Francisco Fundraiser Sunday
April 11, 2008

OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it's fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people are most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre...they're misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.' That's...there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it's sort of a race thing.

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long. They feel so betrayed by government that when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism.

But -- so the questions you're most likely to get about me, 'Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What is the concrete thing?' What they wanna hear is so we'll give you talking points about what we're proposing -- to close tax loopholes, uh you know uh roll back the tax cuts for the top 1%, Obama's gonna give tax breaks to uh middle-class folks and we're gonna provide healthcare for every American.

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background -- there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing.

68. Thank you for posting this transcript
I know its been said over and over, but it puts the one line that is taken and used to attack Obama into context.

I guess when you have nothing to lose you will cling to anything that could potentially help you win which is why McCain and HRC are attacking the juggernaut, Obama.

39. Obama basically pointed out what we've known all along
"Wedge Issues" like god, guns, and immigrant bashing have been pushed in elections rather than who is really responsible for the mass exodus of manufacturing jobs. Bitter people everywhere get what Barack was saying. And they also get it how completely desperate Hillary Clinton has become in trying to get traction against him. For Christ's sake she sounds just like a typical republican hack with her commentary.

20. Not to sound agist...
but I think this guy is chosing McCain over Obama for two reasons:

1) He views Obama as an "intelligent young man" (more comfortable voting for someone his own age with experience similar to his own); and

2) Old Republicans die hard. This guy looks to be my folks' age. My folks aren't happy with the state of the country right now, but they would vote in Cheney over any Dem, if it meant four more years of Republican rule. To them, Roosevelt didn't bring the country out of the Depression, he ruined the country's economy by funding social services.

Both my folks grew up in and still live in areas very much like Allentown, places that once had booming factories and now are impoverished, and yes, bitter. My step-father traveled all over the country trying to find an engineering job in his '50's after the company he worked for went belly-up under Bush I, and finally had to retire after working for 35 years with nothing but his military pension and social security. My mother saw her large retirement savings go completely down the drain with the dotcom bubble burst during the Clinton adminstration. They are both fairly bitter people now. Yet they cling to Republicans like they're sure the booming economy they knew in their 20's under Eisenhower is right around the next corner as long as a Repuke gets in. This guy was like a composite of both my folks.

22. He did pass away a long time ago
But he was so awesome-he started teaching me about politics and to be a loyal liberal dem starting when I was six and said I really liked Richard Nixon. We watched all the Dem and Repub conventions together. Papaw and Mamaw had dinners with their African-American friends in a tiny rural Texas town even in the 1940's when it was kind of dangerous to do it. They lived next door to Mamaw's sister and her husband who was a vocal and loyal Republican. Papaw and his brother-in-law got into some massive political arguments and I loved listening to them. I remember when he was sick with cancer that he walked up the steep courthouse steps with my mother holding him up just so he could vote. Sorry to blab on, but I got to thinking about my grandparents and how wonderful they were and I thought I would share. I was blessed to have had them in my life.

Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 11:38 AM by Divernan
cause he (the guy being interviewed) was an old Navy man.
Plenty of time for him to get a closer look at McCain. There are some very high ranking, recently retired Navy men who actively support Obama, including the current dean of Pittsburgh's Duquesne Law School. Don Guter was a vice admiral and head of the Navy JAG, and is active in defending prisoners at Guantanamo.

But both the interviewee and McCain are pushing up against the actuarial tables.

This doesn't bother the Republicans because the fascists are making all the decisions. They just need a puppet. If McCain falls over, there will be a vice puppet to step in.

Obama did not serve in the military so it would behoove him to pick Wesely Clark as his VP... Remember we have a war going on and some parts of the public think if you haven't served you are in no position to dictate the forces.... Its military group think and Obama needs to overcome it... It's old news, but for someone who grew up in Pennsyl-tucky I still feel it is truly astonishing that the US industrial base has allowed lost the steel industry. The PAs smelted cannon balls for the American Revolution and produced steel for every war and peace time era ever since. And now its gone! unfucking believable!

Clinton jobs comment: PA had/had a Silicon Valley boom in the 90's. Location: Philly and due west to about Lancaster Co. It was the ONLY area of PA to grow by any measure- population, housing, jobs since the long decline starting in the 1970's. The rest of the state is just hanging on.

35. But consider this, under Clinton, the Philadelphia Navy Shipyard closed.
The Navy Yard had been in operation since the early 1800s and closed in 1996 taking 7000 jobs with it. Add to this the closure of DPSC (the Defense Personnel Supply Center, formerly the Quartermasters, which made uniforms for our soliders since the early 1800s), closed in 1999, with more jobs lost. Quite alot of industry went away in the east.

It's only recently that the state and city were able to woo some sort of shipbuilding here - i.e., to use the old Navy ship building facilities for the Kvaerner shipyard to do cruise ships I believe.

48. "sen mcbush...if he's still in there..." does that mean, "if he's not dead of old age by then?"
How...how can they vote for mcbush? It takes all kinds to make the world go round. Ugh...what a sad thought.

After all that, "Uh probably Senator McCain." I understand voting McCain if you're among the most wealthy 10% in the United States.

Never got the chance to see if you were even from PA, considering you claimed to know so much about it.

58. this is so funny and promising

Could it be that they really couldn't find a single person in the town who felt insulted, offended or 'talked down to'

by Barack Obama? Life long Republican voter(s) agreeing with Obama, complimenting him and expressing respect for the

man and his opinion. Beautiful

72. Source of word, elitist
Other than Karl Rove (I presume), I suspect the source of the word elitist as an attack word probably came from some sort of psych research in which persons were given a long list of descriptive words and asked to mark all of the words that describe themselves. Essentially no one marked elitist. Therefore, it became the word of choice for politicians to use on their opponent. Strictly a gimmick. Lets find the research and expose the gimmick.

76. The initial reaction to this interview
If even old-time Republicans agree with Obama's statement, then how out of touch is any Democrat who attempts to contest it (exploit it would be more accurate) for votes? Answer: VERY out of touch.
