Matthews: Whites are ‘willing’ to support Obama in the same way they ‘root for black athletes.

Last night on Hardball, host Chris Matthews sought to give Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) some “advice” on how to get white Americans to vote for him for president:

MATTHEWS: You got to talk like a firebrand because if you‘re carrying their fight for them, they‘re going to like you. You know, a lot of white people root for black athletes because they‘re winning for the home team. People are quite willing to pick up black heroes, if they‘ll win for their side.

1. the Starbucks crowd has not had a winner in my lifetime - their Faculty lounge Obama is not going
to lose because he is black - he will lose because the under 50000 whites - the "common man" - will become "Reagan Democrats" yet again - as they always do when we run the Starbucks choice - ya gotta love those college town choices.

3. Uh, I think not.
The economy is in the toilet and the Republicans are taking the rap for it (deservedly so), even in small town America. I highly doubt that the people who have been hardest hit by the economic recession will vote for McCain...especially since the big asset that lured Reagan Dems to Reagan was his charisma, which McCain lacks utterly but Obama has.

4. Holy Zeus, that guy's an embarrassment.
Obama's the smartest candidate in the race. He's the only one left that has proven he's paid some attention to what's going on in the last 20 years.

Plus, he's been a constitutional law professor and the head of the Harvard Law review, and a community activist.

In the sense that I'm "rooting" for someone who has amazing abilities that are necessary and far beyond mine, race doesn't seem to come into it.

Matthews is so hung up on identity - he can't get beyond it - gender, race, it's like he can't rise above all that to a higher discussion.

7. He must believe that his audience can't follow "higher discussion"
He's a snob not much different from George Will when it comes down to where the rubber meets the road.

5. Most of the time Mathews says the most asinine things ever and on rare occasions he speaks truth.
He's a nutt overall either way :p

6. Almost as bad as Buchanan constantly referring to Obama as a "angry man"
Leaving out the word "black" but obviously still hinting at "angry black man"

12. Where to Begin?
The idea that athletes are "heroes" in the first place.

The idea that white people are inherently so racist, dumb and terrified of black people that you actually have to use a sports analogy to remind them of their comfort with supporting "some" types of blacks. "If you can support those black people over there, then maybe, just maybe you can do the same thing with these black people over here!"

The idea that if Obama talks like a "firebrand" he won't actually scare off MORE of the people referenced in point number 2. Reminds me of that episode of "Scrubs" where JD and Turk were pretending to be the World's Most Giant Doctor. JD (the white guy) was standing on Turk's (the black guy) shoulders in the giant lab coat waving to people who smiled and waved back. When Turk wanted his turn to be on top, JD was forced to sadly say: "Remember what happened the last time we put you on top? People ran."

14. Maybe not a perfect analysis, but Tweetie DOES make some good points in general. i.e.:
I'm an Obama supporter, first of all, and what Tweetie is saying is: "Stop talking from the head and start talking more from the gut and heart. Stop being so metaphysical. Be clear, concise, and concrete. AND GIVE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT." He's actually RIGHT. People want to know in clear terms just what they are getting for their vote. They want a concrete dividend. The R's do it with tax cuts and protection. We need to do it with Social Security, tuition help, middle class tax cuts, and healthcare. Obama DOES need to roll up the sleeves, take off the $2000 suit, put on some bluejeans, talk LOUD and CLEAR about his modest background with college loans and all, his work on the streets of Chicago, and get down in the dirt with these folks. He may not get all the older and working class folks with these efforts, but he does have to do more to cut into those constituencies. He needs to stop talking so much like a college professor and more like a community organizer and basketball player from working class Chicago. (Don't "dumb down," just re-work the vocabulary and syntax a little and talk from the GUT. TELL THAT GREAT PERSONAL STORY. That personal story should be the CENTERPIECE of his narrative, NOT an adjunct piece.
