The Power of Nightmares Volume 3 - Completely debunks War on Terror |
|
Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI2Uwm3ScR0Part 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sSpXakQ8fMPart 4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrsSeniBCzkPart 5 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwjHrbDGPHMPart 6 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy5q0ztgjTMMakes the argument that Al Queda does not exist, that it was a name made up in a trial that bin Laden used later on. Shows a bunch of terrorist cell arrests were made with complete nonsense of evidence, such as a video of a trip to Disneyland. Must see viewing!

1. That is a great documentary. |
|
Jason Burke's book "Al Qaeda" is well worth reading on that subject as well.

3. It was actually required reading for a history of terrorism course I did a few semesters ago. |
|
Should be required reading for anyone who even wants to have a casual conversation about terrorism, I think.

was the neocons and the islamists are similar in some ways - both hate liberal democracy and individualism.
In other ways they seem to be mirror images or even strangely symbiotic: the islamists seem to think that violence is necessary to wake up the populace but the neocons exploit violence to stun the people into a stupor (e.g. 9/11).

9. but the ultimate goal in both cases is the same: |
|
to bring in tons and tons of cash, gold, possessions, hidden bank accounts, and with all of these ill-gotten, criminally acquired fortunes, POWER.
Unlimited, unchecked power, that is.
In short, fascism, in both cases.

In order to bring "democracy" (read: Neoliberalism) to the rest of the world.
So how does this differ from what the radical Islamists do? It doesn't. So why do we think it does? The simple answer comes down to tactics, resources and spheres of influence. Neocons control the most well-resourced government in the world and have a gigantic sphere of influence as a result, so it's easy for them to make their tactics--which kill insane amounts of innocent people--seem legitimate. Islamic terrorism has a much smaller sphere of influence, and considerably fewer resources, so they use tactics that are more suited to said resources: car and suicide bombings, etc.
The neocons use violence to meet their ends in many of the same ways as the Islamist radicals, they just do it on a bigger scale with distorted motivations so we don't think of it as the same.
