FROM: Who is Roger Stone, the Long-Time R Dirty-Trickster and Miami Mob Leader?
Mar-24-08 - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3052618

"Roger J. Stone, Jr. is a long-time Republican dirty-tricks operative who led the mob that shut down the Miami-Dade County recount and helped make George W. Bush president in 2000. He was also a campaign strategist during the presidential campaigns of Presidents Nixon, Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush. He is the chairman of the Fort Hill Group, a Washington, D.C.-based public affairs firm...." (http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Roger_J._Stone,_Jr)

This is another case of illegal and stealth funding. "... During the 2004 presidential primary, Stone served as a behind-the-scenes consultant to black firebrand Al Sharpton's campaign to win the Democratic Party nomination, prompting speculation that Sharpton's campaign was actually a stealth operation to weaken the party's chances of winning in the general election."

Roger Stone, Jr., began his career volunteering for William F. Buckley’s 1965 mayoral campaign, and has since had roles in the presidential campaigns of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. A veteran Republican operative, Stone went to Florida to help the Bush campaign" during the 2000 recount, where he is creditied with organizing the "recount riot." Remember that gaggle of Washington D.C. Congressional aides, the posers pretending to be enraged Floridians, yeah--the guys who got their daily marching orders slipped under hotel doors in envelopes, that's the crew Stone puportedly directed via walkie-talkie from across the street.

Stone has ties to Morton Blackwell's Leadership Institute and started his career in the College Republican National Committee during the Nixon era, when Blackwell "had turned it into a school for political dirty tricks. Both Stone and Blackwell have been closely connected since the 1970's with right-wing fundraiser Richard Viguerie." (http://www.abunchofgreedyrightwingliarswhoworkforwalmart.com/liars.asp?liar=5)

Richard Viguerie, is connected to Scaife, and like Scaife, has been dubbed "the funding father of the conservative movement". See American Target below.

Stone is associated with the swiftboating of Dan Rather.

1. They're trying to get the Obama campaign to respond,
giving this somewhat aging rumor some legitimacy. It should be ignored until and unless they come forward with the tape.

10. And how would he expose them by denying it?
It can't be done. They don't have to produce anything in order to keep the air smelling like shit, and Obama's responding to the oder would do nothing to dissipate it.

14. His surrogates would do that by exposing the characters behind it
as the OP did

Yes, denying it WOULD stop it. letting it hang out there would cause doubt in many of the idiot's mind in this country

He has always responded to distortions and lies, and I believe he will continue to do so

That is why he is our nominee

15. a responce keeps it on the air...
Often, the first I even hear of something is when the report is "candidate XYZ responds to rumors that...." If they put out a response, every single time that response is aired, it has to be preceded by another restatement of the "controversy." (Simply so viewers know what they're talking about, of course; the media strives to keep viewers informed.)

Viewers who don't trust Obama will then see the accusation and dismiss the response. "Controversy surrounds accusations that Barack Obama raped a mule while facing Mecca. The Obama campaign denies this." ("Did you hear that Obama raped a mule? He denies it, of course, but who are you going to believe?")

The media thrives on the "he said, she said; the truth is somewhere in the middle" format, so denying them the counterargument denies them the ability to build a show around it. Sure, they'll get some mileage out of any random accusation alone, but much less than they'd get out of a "controversy." The campaign took the time to respond to it, there must be something there!

24. Precisely. One responce will require another and another etc.
There may be at time to deal with this. But it sure ain't now.

26. Still_one has a good point, though...
When the Swiftboater crap started, the Kerry Campaign took the view that they shouldn't dignify it with a response(! I can't spell either, obviously ;) ). Of course, we all know how that turned out.

I think it's a matter of choosing your battles. Kerry should've gone after the Swiftboaters, because what they were saying went right to the heart of one of Kerry's prime arguments for why he was fit for the office, as well as feeding the image of Democrats as fake soldiers (unlike the real war heroes Cheney and Bush, of course).

So, maybe we can say if it's just some random "gotcha" sort of deal, you shouldn't respond, because you're only feeding the coverage. If they're lies that go to the heart of how you define your candidacy (like if someone is supposed to be tough on drugs, but they were so messed up when they were younger that they don't even remember if they ever even tried cocaine ;) ), then they need to be attacked and utterly destroyed.

This sounds like it belongs in the former group--embarrassing (if true) but not something that goes to the heart of the campaign.

off camera ...

In any case, it is typical FAUX trash.

Mike Brown hit the nail on the head though...:woohoo:

4. Michael Brown echoes what I've said for years...
The GOP has nothing, all they can do is go negative at any chance.

Stone, if he lived in an earlier age would have been tarred, feathered, put in stocks and free rotten veggies would be avaiable to public to be used as target practice...a system we might be happy to revert to...

5. I disagree, Obama should come out loud and strong on this one
and expose them for what they are

The advantage of Obama doing it is they would have to put up or shut up

In addition Obama surrogates can expose stone and fox. I have no doubt that CNN and MSNBC would be more than happy to go after fox for a false story

We should have learned by now that letting lies sit unanswered will destroy us

16. They know the tape does not say Whitey.
That's why no one seems to have actually seen it. My guess is that there is a tape and it does say "why'd he" and they know that. No one wants to be the guy who saw it and confirms that the tape says whitey. No one wants to be the idiot getting the blame when the truth comes out. I'll bet when they first got the tape that they did indeed think it said whitey. They were so excited by it that they can't let it go even after they have found out differently. (probably paid a good penny for it too)

They will spread this nonsense. Eventually the magical tape will appear. They will either have doctored it so that you can't really tell what she says or they will announce quietly that they made an error. However dipshit America (30-50% of AMericans )will not see the minor correction but will have heard about the tape saying Whitey so many times that they will still believe in 20 years that it said Whitey.
