4. Star Wars and Star Trek? Lord of the Rings?
No need to go there, Cenk. No need at all :P

Seriously though, my wife and I were oddly (and somewhat uncomfortably) led to believe - by a speech he gave - that he might be one of the few good republicans out there. As my wife just said, "I knew he had to have bananas in his pants or something." Never heard that before, but sums up my thoughts too.

This is actually pretty big news, of course I haven't heard it anywhere else yet. Thanks.

5. Can Cenk prove this DIDN'T happen?
I am not claiming that it did, but for anyone who wasn't there to say it didn't happen because he, nor anyone that he can think of, never experienced the same thing seems presumptious to me. That being the case, I cannot assume Jindal is crazy for what he asserts he witnessed. I wasn't there, Cenk wasn't there. And whether we want to admit it or not, it is possible for things to occur in the world which cannot be explained nor witnessed by more than a few people.(For example, the world was still round even though it was once considered a "fact" that it was flat) No, I doubt Jindal can prove that what he experienced occurred. However, Cenk cannot prove it didn't either, and making fun of the "messenger" doesn't count as disproving.

That being said, Jindal IS crazy for being a Republican.

24. I am surprised that people are having such a difficult time with what I wrote
I am NOT claiming that it exists, NOR am I claiming that it doesn't. It can neither be proved nor disproved. My concern is that Cenk thinks that laughing at someone is the same as disproving its existence. It doesn't. And just because you have never experienced it does not mean it doesn't exist.

What's more, I don't care that any of you think me foolish. You still haven't proven that "the devil" does not exist merely by laughing at me. And I find all of you "naysayers" daft for not getting this simple fact: you cannot prove that his experience was not real! HA! HA! HA!

There is no "Satan" and people do not become possessed. It's ludicrous to even consider that this could be true.

40. Can you prove that the f*cking Keebler Elves don't live in my back yard?
I claim that they do, and I have the cookies to prove it! You haven't experienced Elfin Goodness, so you can't say that they don't!

Ockham's Razor, dude. What is more likely, that the woman had a seizure, and this dude, instead of calling an ambulance, decides to hold an exorcism, or the woman was actually possessed by "The Devil." Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Demonic possession is an extraordinary claim. He has to prove it to US that it happened. We do NOT have to prove it didn't.

10. Jindal reminds me of an old political science professor of mine
The guy was brilliant in his field; did some groundbreaking work in non-linear dynamic theory in politics, and won himself tenure at Emory. Whereupon he went on late-night talk radio shows to demonstrate his mechanical device for talking to Jesus. seriously.

16. This can actually happen.
The whole exorcism thing, maybe, but things such as healing and exorcism happened in the Bible and are reported today as well. Read some articles by Pastor Steve Nicholson in Vineyard Church in Evanston, IL or other Christian scholars or leaders. This stuff actually happens and only happens if you pray to Jesus, people can't just come up and say "Presto, your healed." It can only happen through praying.

Now, saying this, that does not necessarily mean that what Gov. Jindal experienced was actual healing prayer - who knows, maybe it never happened or he is just making it up. However, from what I've experienced, healing prayer can and does happen all the time.

19. I don't want to derail this thread but I do have to say
it also says in the Bible that it's an abomination against God to eat shellfish or to wear clothing made of mixed fibers (cotton polyester blend, etc.). And that people can be stoned to death for infidelity or other, arguably lesser acts.

I'm an agnostic, but even most theists do not take the bible literally and or think that EVERY item contained in it (either text) continues to have relevance today. If taken literally, it becomes just about impossible to reconcile it with reality.

PS---You should watch the movie Jesus Camp, it's very interesting. And as you can see, it received many good reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/jesus_camp/

18. In addition -
I don't like that Cenk is insinuating that what some Christians believe MUST be crazy. I mean, come on, I'm Catholic and we believe in all sorts of things! Muslims believe in Jannah, and Christians believe in Heaven and hell. Does that make these people crazy. Having an actual mental illness is different from believing things that a lot of people in this world think are "crazy."

Just wanted to make sure I said that.

But this doesn't have any legs. I'll even venture to say that there is a significant majority that believes in "supernatural forces", regardless of whether they consider themselves religious or not.

37. I love that...
I can't explain something, so I'll just attribute it to a supernatural being. Seems like real solid scientific reasoning to me. BTW, what I have as big of a problem with as the whole devil tried to possess me thing and I could smell sulfur thing (he probably DID believe he smelled it, the mind can do weird things) is that they took this poor woman, who was probably scared shitless and did this to her against her will. I could just imagine how I'd feel if my conservative friends (if I actually had any) felt that because of my views or behavior I was also possessed, and decided to do this to me. I'd be scared to death of what these freaks might do to me when they have themselves that worked up.

38. OK, attribute it to science then.
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 10:24 PM by PerpetuallyDazed
You're free to do that, but you'll likely find that concepts of "faith" and "belief" don't really jive with the scientific method... again, it's not provable or unprovable. It's in a completely different frame than the one you're comfortable dealing with.

Also, do you know the details of this "exorcism"? You can speculate until the cows come home but we both know that unless you know the woman or all the ins-and-outs of the situation you'll never know that truth. :)
