Gas prices are hitting all-time highs. Our country is in the midst of a recession thanks in part to our crippling dependence on oil, so what's John McCain's plan? Will he hold the corporate leaders of the energy industry accountable when he addresses them today in Houston? Probably not, considering they are some of his biggest fund-raisers.

The Center for Responsive Politics finds that McCain has accepted over $1 million from the oil and gas industry. Many of McCain's top advisers have lobbied for big oil, which is why he now acts in their best interests, opposing environmental legislation and alternative energy plans. And that's exactly why we want everyone to know The REAL McCain.

McCain is desperate to distance himself from President Bush. But according to the Center for American Progress Action Fund, McCain has received millions in donations from the same oil, coal, nuclear, chemical, utility, and auto companies that helped the Bush administration create its energy plan—a plan that has raised gasoline to $4 a gallon.

Here's what you can do: Send this e-mail to ten of your friends, family members, and colleagues. Tell them to send it on to ten people they know. And don't forget to Digg it! Spread the word that McCain is taking major contributions from wealthy oil executives like Bob Mosbacher, just one of the special interest leaders he'll be addressing in Houston."

1. "Require"
I don't feel people should be "required" to do things by the government either. However, it could be a matter of making any tax breaks (such as the ones big oil currently enjoy) contingent on exploring alternative energy sources. THAT would be fine, in my mind.

Realistically, we cannot expect big oil to cut their own profits by coming up with a cheaper alternative...not unless they can control that one too, and spike the prices when they like. That's the nature of the beast we call capitalism.

2. I agree
I would remove all subsidies and increase royalties on Federal lands to world-wide rates (discounted royalties amount to a hidden subsidy). Windfall profits taxes just lead to accounting shennannigans and worse.

Stop the subsidies to hydrocarbons and provide them to renewables.

3. And I agree with that
All good sound and reasonable ideas. Why the HELL are we giving tax breaks and subsidizing oil companies when they're getting record profits???

It's insanity.

And yes, I know the answer...we have two oil men in the White House right now. That's why.

6. I wouldn't require it either.

I don't want their dirty fingers in the alternative energy market. If they do to wind, solar, etc. what they've done to oil, we are fucked.

We should do everything possible to keep the oil monopolies out of the alternative energy market.

But the part about his ties to oil is good though.

7. And I'm in YOUR camp on this.
If WE THE PEOPLE are gonna underwrite new energy developments, it ought to be limited to the "little guys" that are trying to get a foothold in emerging technologies. We keep handing handouts to these oil companies and it's just like feeding a black hole!
