Uncle Sam Wants YOU--To Own Guns? |
|
Like it or not, the Court just handed one to the Right. Now what do we do?

1. Guns aren't a left/right issue anymore |
|
I'm pro-gun and I don't even own one.
Some of the biggest neocons I know support gun control to keep them out of the hands of "those people"

Thank you for pointing out that it's not a left/right issue anymore. I'm a Liberal who DOES own guns.
Hubby was a police officer long before we ever married. He has always had guns in the home, and when we met and married (third time for both of us) I knew he had guns, and after all these years it's just become "normal" that they're here.
In fact, the other day when my husband was out, an unknown man on a motorcycle showed up unexpectedly. We're very rural and somewhat isolated here, so I was a bit afraid...and I went looking for the shotgun just in case. No way in hell I'm going to be someone's victim in my own home...although the shotgun is only loaded with blanks that we use to scare away the bears that sometimes show up here during the summer.
Anyway, the person left and that was the end of the drama.
I never used to think much about being afraid until those two professors, the Zantops, were brutally murdered in New Hampshire a few years ago.
So, you're right...it's no longer a left/right issue anymore.
Actually I'm sitting here slightly amused thinking that I'm probably one of the "those people" the Neocons don't want to have access to guns...

Your story is a perfect example of why gun ownership is best regulated at a local level. There have to be SOME kind of regulations! People who live outside of a 911 quick response area clearly have a greater need to own a gun that someone who lives down the block from a police station. But then, we also don't want people to be able to carry guns in elementary schools. Common sense is needed.

2. As I see it, you have two reasonable alternatives |
|
1. Go out and buy a gun to celebrate the affirmation of your personal right to do so, or
2. Celebrate your personal right not to have a gun by banning guns from your home.

We have a tax holiday every year a week or so before school starts where you can buy clothes, school supplies, etc without paying sales tax. Good policy, actually helps low income folks more than higher income. Well, we just passed a law this year that will set up a tax holiday weekend for buying guns- pistols, shotguns, rifles, anything. One jackass in the legislature said a goal of the legislation was to encourage gun ownership. Rednecks with guns, just what we need.

Well, that's why I think we should let local communities make these laws. When they pass a stupid law, you can always move to where smarter people and legislators live.

I've been a gun owner all my life and never felt that my right to own a weapon was ever in jeopardy. And I certainly never felt it necessary to join the NRA to have my 2nd amendment rights defended.

7. The NRA had nothing to do with this case. |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-26-08 04:33 PM by high_and_mighty
The NRA had nothing to do with this. In fact they tried to stop it from going to court. Then when the NRA saw that Heller was still going through with it they tried to get on board. Heller's lawyers didn't want to lose control of the case. They didn't accept the NRA's offer to join with them.
Also while its great that you are a gun owner that doesn't feel the need to have his 2nd amendment rights defended. A lot of other people feel other wise. For example Heller and a lot of other people in DC. The Supreme Court felt it needed to hear his case and even agreed with him that his 2nd amendment rights were being violated and struck down a law to set it right.

Fear.... guess who really benefited? Those making the arms and selling them. Who paid? The people....
Not about rights... it's about money.
