10. He wasn't a string bean, he was a pea |
|
And there were two photographs by the "peas" on his costume--one of McCain, one of Bush. The idea, of course, was that they are as alike as two peas in a pod. I wonder if he was ticketed as well, or if his protest was too subtle for them to get.

32. My Personal Observation |
|
I am an Obama supporter/donor from Portland.
I attended the massive 75,000 person rally here. The rally organizers specified that no signs could be brought in, and security allowed no one in with a sign. Their reason was that a weapon could hidden in a sign (I am serious). No one was arrested that I know about but no signs got in.
After we were inside the staffers passed out the official Obama placards and later passed many hand painted signs supporting the candidate. Total message control - as a viet vet and a veteran of the Vietnam demos - I could only shake my head and think "Welcome to the new world"

45. Yes, the real question is if anyone else was allowed to bring signs in |
|
If nobody was allowed to bring a sign in, then that is acceptable not to let her in. Maybe (only maybe) if she had a bush=mcCain t-shirt and hat she would be allowed let in. You probably have to bring in a Marker and write on one of the signs they hand out.

|
This protest zone- shield the candidate from the bad news cycle coverage (by protesters in a crowd) is IMHO a very important and uncovered story. Every campaign event should have a section (like the 344 days hostages in Iran thing) about who was and wasn't allowed into an event and who got kicked out. How many times has Dim Son spoked in public in 8 years? (Once, at least recently, cause he was heckled but basically almost never).

47. I don't know the answer to that question, but there is at least one distinction: |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-08-08 11:16 AM by Seabiscuit
this was a private event apparently held on city property, and there may be different rules at play.
Regardless, I don't think the secret service or the police give a rat's ass whether what they did was legal - by the time a judge may decide to rule that they all violated her rights, the McCain event will be long gone. They accomplished their goal of keeping even the slightest hint of protest out of the venue.
OTOH, I suspect the local D.A. will drop the charges - they don't want to risk a judge ruling that the city police violated her 1st Amendment rights.

58. We had a similar incident here |
|
Public park, private event - to which the public was invited. One of our group had a sign the people holding the party didn't like and they asked the cops to arrest her for trespassing. We have an attorney in our group and he told the cops we were on public property and they couldn't arrest her. So the cops let her go.
As far as we could tell, public property is always public property and free speech rules apply regardless of who is renting the property. Our attorney called the police dept attorneys and attorneys with the city after this incident and they agreed.
