He brought out every point of the gaffe and countered each one quite effectively. The economy is the Achilles heel of the GOP, I think. Even those who don't care about the war or the loss of civil liberties, etc, do care about the fact that their real income and buying power is going down.

Why, when Phil Gramm was a child, they sometimes went for weeks between meals when mastodons and giant saber toothed lions were scarce...

Gas prices? They didn't have no stinkin' gas back then...they walked everywhere they went, 500 miles uphill both ways!

Can't afford to clothe the family? Sissies! A walk through your backyard will uncover some perfectly suitable small rodents whose pelts can be sewn into robes and mittens and really cool hats.

Home in foreclosure? You damned whiners! Find a cave to live in. Kick out whatever bear or skunks might already be living in it (or shoot 'em and solve a whole bunch of problems at once...food, clothing, etc) and you've got a perfectly acceptable abode, even in the winter, when you can scour the countryside looking for wood to burn (imagine not having to depend on fossil fuel!)
