Note: This is not offered up as any insight into one of the darkest days in our nation's history. What this is offered for is an understanding of the economic and energy situation we find ourselves in right now.

Now, are they all like this gentleman? I deeply doubt it. Did they all make money on this terrible day? Certainly not. Still, this is instructive, because certainly, there are enough of them around that would think and act this way that people across the world would pay a terrible price.

Remember: markets are manifestations of group-think. Nothing more. All you need to do is watch a real-time chart of the trading of the S&P index to see that simple fact. It would take a very few people, making trades in one direction or another to start a stampede.

If you really want to understand the markets, go down to the local aquarium and watch a school of sardines swim about.

1. I *am* a commodities trader

Not exclusively... I trade other asset classes as well. And I see it a bit differently.

If you think you really understand the market, then open a futures account and TRADE it.

If you can consistently make money, then you understand it.

It took me 2 years and a LOT of lost $$$ before I started to understand it and make money in it.

Most people who think they understand it, can't trade it (note: trade ... I didn't say invest)

2. I have a lot of respect for you...
But what I am seeing right now is one of the finest examples of group-think I have ever seen. And group-think is always bad.

And I still think that your post on the market, with graphs, was one of the best things I have ever read here on DU. Just what needed to be said.
